June 16, 2023 · Health

Hemp for pain relief has gained popularity in recent years due to the potential positive benefits found in research in its preliminary stages, which show it could alleviate different types of pain. Hemp and CBD products are made out of the hemp plant, which is a variety of the cannabis plant family. Hemp-derived products have been showing promising results, but more studies are needed to fully understand how well they work as well as the optimal dosage and administration. This means that hemp for pain relief will vary between individuals in terms of response and efficacy.

What types of pain can hemp relieve?

Chronic pain

Hemp-derived products have been studied for several years due to their potential to reduce chronic pain. CBD interacts with neurotransmitters and neuroreceptors that regulate a variety of bodily functions such as pain, inflammation, mood and even immune response. Hemp for pain relief products can be used to treat conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia and inflammatory pain among others.

Headaches and migraines

Less well-known yet CBD products can be used to relieve headaches and migraines. It is thought that due to hemp’s potential anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, it may have the potential to contribute to reducing the severity and frequency of these issues.

Muscle and joint pain

Another great way of using hemp for pain relief is to use topical creams or oils to soothe joint and muscle pain. Good for athletes and sports enthusiasts, it can be used for cramps by applying the product directly to the affected area, letting the CBD interact to reduce inflammation and pain.

Postoperative pain

Some people use hemp for pain relief for postoperative discomfort, as the CBD in hemp products can help manage pain. The substances in hemp interact with endocannabinoid receptors in our bodies which could potentially have positive effects when ingested orally or topically.

Cancer-related pain

Patients with different types of cancer can have varied pain-related symptoms such as inflammation, nerve pain and other symptoms derived from their treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation. CBD present in the hemp plant has been researched and has even been included in cancer-related pain management.

Negative effects of using hemp for pain relief

Dry mouth

Generally speaking, hemp for pain relief is well tolerated by most people, however, there can be some uncomfortable side effects such as a dry mouth. This happens because CBD can decrease salivation for short periods, which leads the person to be thirsty. This can be managed by staying hydrated while taking CBD products.

Fatigue and drowsiness

Some people have reported feeling more tired or drowsy after using hemp for pain relief. CBD can sometimes have a sedative effect which leads to feeling fatigued. It is best not to drive if you are experiencing these sensations.

Appetite changes

It has been reported that some individuals experience changes in appetite when taking CBD products orally. This could result in increased appetite or decreased appetite when using hemp products.

Gastrointestinal issues

When hemp for pain relief is taken by mouth, the products could potentially affect individuals at a gastrointestinal level. The symptoms could include nausea and an upset stomach or digestion. These uncomfortable side effects are usually not severe but keep an eye out.

Drug interactions

Bear in mind that consuming hemp for pain relief products could interact with certain medications, particularly those that are metabolized through the liver. CBD could potentially affect the activity of that medication, including other pain medications. If you are taking any type of prescription meds it is best to speak to your doctor before trying CBD products.
